What is Kriya Meditation?

Kriya meditation is a mostly seated practice that involves breath work and physical postures to help process thoughts and emotions.

This method of meditation can be energetic and engaging at times and calm and grounding at other moments. Originating in the Himalayas in India, Kriya has been past down orally from teacher to student. I'm excited to bring this powerful tool to the west.

Benefits of Kriya Meditation include trauma release, anxiety relief, stress reduction, and the breaking of negative thought patterns.

About Me

Rafael Amar’s yoga and meditation journey began in 2013 after he served as a combat soldier. Yoga and meditation provided tools to deal with the difficult emotions he experienced during his tours as a soldier in the middle east and various refugee camps.

In 2020, he completed studies to become an emergency room nurse and worked at a busy downtown hospital in New Mexico during the pandemic. After 3 years working in the hospital,  Rafael left nursing due to burnout and compassion fatigue.  He set off to India and completed 500 hrs of training from Master Teacher Anand Mehortra at The Sattva Yoga Academy.

He currently works part time as an emergency room nurse in San Francisco and teaches meditation in small group settings to primarily nurses and veterans helping them process complex emotions through breathwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kriya Meditation is one of the most beginner-friendly styles of meditation because it's active and engaging for those who have a hard time sitting still. There are no rigid rules with Kriya, unlike other methods, and the practice does not require any prior knowledge.
No. Kriya is not affiliated with any religion and in fact precedes most modern religions. It originates from Yoga texts dating back to around 1500 BCE that were written by a compilation of unnamed authors who contemplated the meaning of life and its nature. These original teachers had no desire to create religion or gain power, but simply taught their students tools to understand the world around them. This form of meditation originates way before Buddhism or Hinduism and does not require the student to subscribe to any form of dogma.
Kriya is a powerful tool that can teach you how to master your mind and break negative thought patterns that don't serve you. If you're looking to live your life with intention and spirituality, this meditation tool will help you gain better perspective by connecting with the present moment. With consistent practice, the meditator can live a life more in tune with their values and become aware when they are drifting away from them.
Yes and no. Only you can help yourself. Ultimately, no drug, practice, or healer can “heal” you without you putting in the work. Meditation is a powerful tool to aid your own healing.  The road is long and only you can take the steps forward. Meditation, if practiced regularly, can help you navigate difficult emotions and traumas. It is a tool for change. If you're looking to harness your own power and understand your mind, meditation will give you the strength to walk on the path of self discovery. As a meditation teacher, I look forward to walking that road with you and helping you along the way.
